Upon passing out from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Mark Phillips was commissioned into 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards in 1969. Captain Mark Phillips began his successful equestrian career when he rode in The Beaufort Hunt Pony Club team for five successive years, reaching the final on three occasions.
He went on to win team gold medals at the Munich 1972 Olympics, 1970 World and 1971 European Championships, as well as winning Badminton four times and Burghley once. In addition to being one of the world’s leading three day event riders, Captain Phillips has also represented Great Britain in the show jumping arena in two winning Nation’s Cup teams.

After a silver medal at the Seoul 1988 Olympics with the British Three Day Event Olympic team, Mark announced his retirement from international competition.

In addition to his competitive successes, Mark is a globally renowned equestrian teacher and has written two books on equestrianism: Captain Mark Phillips on Riding (1986) and The Horse and Hound Book of Eventing (1993). Mark has also produced the successful television series Start Riding and writes a twice weekly column for Horse and Hound, Britain’s leading equestrian magazine.
