Established in September 2003 by the Gallery Director, James Erskine, Liverpool Street Gallery is located in East Sydney. The building, by the architect George Hatzisavas, provides 50 square metres of exhibition space and a focused environment for the viewer.
The gallery is dedicated to the exhibition and promotion of contemporary painting and sculpture by established and emerging artists. The gallery represents both established and emerging Australian artists, including: John Beard, Kevin Connor, Virginia Coventry, Steven Harvey, Daniel Hollier, Christopher Horder, Anwen Keeling, Allan Mitelman, Guy Peppin, David Serisier, Jeannette Siebols, Peter Sharp, Aida Tomescu, Kate Turner, Dick Watkins and Karl Wiebke. Liverpool Street Gallery also exhibits the work of Rick Amor, Gunter Christmann, John Kelly (UK) and Kevin Lincoln.
Notable solo exhibitions of internationally recognised artists have included; Tony Bevan Paintings (2004, 2006), The Estate of Jon Schueler Mood Changes (2006), Enrique Martínez Celaya Boy (Part III) (2004) and The Lovely Season (2008) and Jennifer Lee (2006, 2010). In each case the Liverpool Street Gallery exhibition has been the artist’s inaugural in the southern hemisphere.
The gallery’s curatorial programme is significantly differentiated by the exhibition of Australian artists alongside their international contemporaries as evident in Painting (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010) in which works by artists including Frank Auerbach, Susan Rothenberg, Terry Winters, Christopher Wool, Leon Kossoff, Jonathon Lasker, Damien Loeb and Callum Innes were sourced from significant private collections in Australia and displayed in conjunction with Liverpool Street Gallery’s represented artists.
Exhibiting a programme of high profile Australian and international contemporary artists, often accompanied by extensive publications, Liverpool Street Gallery stands as one of the preeminent commercial galleries in Australia.
